The Zoom Boom or Lockdown Face!
The pandemic has certainly brought us a little closer to...ourselves. How many times have you been in a zoom meeting and you can't stop assessing the way you look? Even just in a catch up with friends. Apparently, you're not alone.

Plastic surgeons (generalised) are reporting a rise in procedures brought on by us picking apart what we're looking at on the screen. But what's also interesting is that the rise can be attributed to the new found 'down time' available to us. We are rushing to go under the knife so we can recover at home without our work friends even knowing we've had surgery and even in some instances, taking any time off.

In 2016 Medicare removed the item number for an abdominoplasty leaving countless women unable to have this life changing surgery. There have been petitions and research papers produced ever since, aiming to have it reinstated, but it remains blocked. The latest petition closes on the 23rd September. Please sign it here so that more post partum women can have access to this surgery. 😘😘

Um, what? Done.
Not sure whether to find this funny or frightening, or maybe even with a slight side of relief. On one hand it's nice to see so many people calling this behavior out, but in the same breath, it's also sad and scary to think that young women are seeing this and believing it's an accessible change.
This isn't accessible. Not even for a Kardashian. Photoshop or other photo editing software has been used in this transformation, that is plain to see. So why is this ok? Why are they the most famous women in the world, when they are blatantly editing their images?

Now that plastic surgery and beauty procedures such as anti wrinkle treatments have been approved to re-commence after the Covid-19 lockdown restrictions, we can expect to see a crazy wait-list at injectors around the country.
So what does your appointment look like now?
Hygiene and patient safety have always been at the forefront of any fully qualified, responsible injector and now won't be any different in regards to focus. Some of the procedures to be implemented may be a little different though. You may have your temperature taken as you enter the clinic, you may be asked to wait inside your car until your appointment time, you will see staff wearing PPE, you may have to fill in a Covid Consent form. You can rest easy knowing that your clinic is maintaining their tough cleaning guidelines as well. Of course, this has always been the case.
You may need to wait longer for your appointments now, as the demand for treatments grows and some clinics are working hard to get through their backlog of cancelled pre-covid appointments.

Popstar Pink has said that she is happy to grow old, showing all the marks of ageing. Wrinkles show you spent your life laughing, your nose looks like your childrens' nose and that her individuality is far more important than her face.
She says "I am of the mindset that it's a blessing to grow old. I pray I look older in ten years, cause that will mean I am alive."

I applaud her choice to grow old 'gracefully'. But if you get enhancements along the way, are you not gracefully ageing? What does it even mean to age gracefully? There is a lot to growing old, and it's certainly not all about aesthetics. Growing old gracefully, to me is multi faceted. It's about growing as a person inside too. From your teens, through your twenties, thirties and to your forties we go through so many internal changes and they're not all bad.

Cosmetic plastic surgery is a choice.
There's no denying that it's becoming more socially acceptable to go down the path of surgery to change something about yourself. Whether you were born with a crooked nose, deformed breasts or you have experienced massive weight loss through diet or pregnancy, the option of using surgery to 'fix' things is now more accessible than ever.
In the age of all things social media, the misrepresentation of someone's looks through the use of photo apps and editing can distort reality so much that we are left questioning what is real, what is facetuned, and what surgery have they had. Coupled with the influence this has on someone who sees highly edited photos and wants to look that way themselves is a struggle for so many.
So what's the answer? I think where plastic surgeons have a responsibility is in assessing the patients' expectations and managing them. Being appropriately trained to acknowledge when their patients' expectations are unrealistic and having meaningful conversations with them to ensure they understand the difference between what they want and what is achievable for them, I think should be at the forefront of patient consults. When you sign your paperwork giving your authority for the surgery, you are giving your 'informed consent'. But what is 'informed consent' and how do you give it with 100% clarity? Informed consent by definition, via www.healthdirect.gov.au - Informed consent in healthcare means you will be given understandable and clear information about your choices so you can make the right decisions. As much as your surgeon has their responsibility to provide clear information and provide educated expectations, the role of the patient also needs to be considered. What can a patient do to have realistic expectations and be informed? Read the literature your surgeon provides you. Ask any questions you have to be comfortable that you understand risks, outcomes and any complications that may occur. Take as much time as you need to complete the form. Any quality surgeon's priority is always to ensure you understand all the risks, you have clear expectations and that you are pleased with your experience.
A news article came out this week talking about surgeons who use Instagram to influence. But is it influencing, or is it marketing? Is it another avenue where patients can obtain their informatipn enabling them to provide their informed consent? Where do you draw the line?

An important opt out notice has been issued by Turner Freeman Lawyers, the lawyers who have commenced a class action against The Cosmetic Institute (TCI) on behalf of hundreds of Australian women. These women have reported suffering intra and post surgical complications as a result of breast surgeries performed by TCI in both NSW and Qld locations.

Stassi Schroeder - love her!
The Vanderpump beauty is always open and honest about her enhancements. In 2015 Stassi underwent a breast reduction and lift, a surgery she had wanted since she was a young teen suffering with large breasts and bra indents. Anyone who has had to live with this knows just how painful and debilitating it can be. But her more noticeable procedure, also received whilst she was a teen and gifted to her as a high school graduation present, was a chin implant. Yes, you read that correctly Stassi's parents gifted her a chin implant as a graduation present. “If you’re questioning their parenting skills, whatevs,” writes the now 30 year old. “They trusted my judgment, and I was desperate for a bigger chin and more defined jawline.” She still says that it was the best thing she ever did.

Breast implants are the most popular of cosmetic surgeries, without a doubt. You might think "everyone's getting them!" .......and you're probably not far from the truth. I think the line between embracing your femininity and loving your body the way it has been given to you is becoming blurred. Well not so much blurred, but more aligned.
Are you more likely to feel feminine with a nice set of breasts? Maybe you will. Do you feel more feminine with a set of post breast feeding breasts? Maybe that's more you. One thing is for certain though - "women should do what they want if it adds to their life satisfaction." 👌🙌

Married at First Sight's Martha shares her enhancements. Read the full story from news.com.au.
One of the questions delivered to #MAFS contestants Michael and Martha was whether they had undergone any cosmetic enhancements.
While Michael revealed that he had a rhinoplasty to correct a broken nose, Martha admitted to a list of enhancements which included having her boobs done, a rhinoplasty and injectable treatments. She also listed off fake nails and having her hair chemically straightened.
"I like to look good and whatever it takes," she said. Loving this attitude, Martha! ....and you look gorgeous.

Body shaming is rife on social media and it is not only relevant to larger bodies, as you may think. Body shaming exists for all types.
